Nav/ISR Workshop

April 29 - May 1

The Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies (TSC), The USN Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Cold Regions Research & Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) co-host a workshop on behalf of the International Cooperative Engagement Program for Polar Research (ICE-PPR) Situational Awareness Working Group (SAWG) to explore Navigation, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (Nav/ISR) technologies that are key to Arctic situational awareness in near and long-term timeframes.

Situational awareness and domain awareness are terms that refer to the necessity for information superiority to support decision superiority. Arctic situational awareness is hindered by lack of region-specific assets, harsh climate, remoteness, paucity of data, and geopolitical tension. This workshop brings together policymakers, practitioners, and researchers from across partner nations, the joint force, interagency, and academic community to identify Nav/ISR capabilities, vulnerabilities, research gaps, and research priorities for the SAWG and its constituent, supporting, and supported organizations.

The workshop format will include presentations and structured participant engagement. Key-note speakers and panel presenters will frame key topic areas and respond to audience questions. Each panel session will be followed by a facilitated discussion among workshop participants that captures not only key points from the presentations, but also insights, impressions, and reflections of workshop participants. The outcomes of the workshop including a workshop report identifying Nav/ISR research priorities will depend on carefully planned facilitation, well documented participant feedback, and detailed notes. ONR supports the planning, facilitation, and documentation of the workshop with Forge Forward (contract).
