Arctic Pacific Security Dialogue

Gen. Gregory Guillot, Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, delivers a keynote address during the Anchorage Security and Defense Conference (ASDC) Nov. 19, 2024, in Anchorage, Alaska. ASDC is aimed at convening defense and security practitioners to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the circumpolar Arctic and neighboring regions with international security implications. During his remarks, Guillot recognized that defending critical infrastructure in the Arctic is at the heart of homeland defense, saying “as the Arctic continues to shape global security, our combined approach in this region will define our ability to secure the safety of our nation.” (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Coming in 2025, the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies is proud to introduce the Arctic Pacific Security Dialogue.

The United States occupies a unique geopolitical position as both an Indo-Pacific nation and an Arctic nation. Nowhere is this dual identity more evident than in Alaska, a state where these two strategically critical regions intersect. The Arctic Pacific Security Dialogue will examine the Bering Strait, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and North Pacific Ocean as a region of convergence, essential to America’s national security strategy and a gateway to both the Indo-Pacific and the Arctic.

From the Arctic, the United States monitors and responds to the intensifying geopolitical competition in the region, as nations vie for emerging shipping routes and vast natural resources exposed by melting sea ice. Simultaneously, Alaska serves as a key platform for engaging in the Indo-Pacific, a region characterized by dynamic economic growth and complex security challenges, including maritime disputes and the rising influence of peer competitors.

Harnessing this strategic advantage will require sustained innovation and collaboration to ensure the United States and our partners and allies remain secure and prepared for the future.
