Markus A. Thomi

Markus joined the Ted Stevens Center on a part-time detail from the U.S. Department of State on February 6, 2023; he continues to serve as the Senior Advisor in the Office of the U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region at the State Department.  A Foreign Service Office with the Department, Markus, prior to coming to the Ted Stevens Center, worked as the Special Assistant for European and Russian Affairs, Arms Control, and the Arctic to the Deputy Secretary of State and as Deputy Senior Director for European and Russian Affairs and Director for NATO and the Nordics at the National Security Council.  He previously served as a NATO Desk Officer with the Department of State’s European Affairs Bureau, as Economic Officer with the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, as Consular Office at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, and as Political and Public Affairs Office at the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Libya.  Before joining the Foreign Service, Markus worked as an attorney in the Arbitration and Civil Litigation practice of Freshfield LLP in New York.

He holds a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University; a Master’s in Public Policy Degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government; and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Washington.  An avid skier and traveler, Markus currently resides in Washington, DC and Anchorage, AK.
